Swanson and Crew Head to Delaware International this Weekend

Swanson and Crew Head to Delaware International this Weekend

Fresh off of a two race weekend which saw the Fright night race at Bedford Speedway be cancelled just after the drivers meeting.  Swanson and his 17j crew had to wait another night to hit the track.  Saturday night was the annual running of the Jack Gunn Memorial race paying a nice $3,500 to win.  Swanson and the 17j were one of 40 cars on hand.  Just making the race was a win in itself.  Swanson and the 17j failed to qualify for the Jack Gunn Memorial.

This weekend the 17j will travel to a very familiar tack.  Swanson and crew will head about 3 hours south to the Delaware International Speedway located in DelmarDE.  This famed 1/2 mile track has been a fixture on the URC schedule for many years now.  It’s a place that Swanson knows very well.  Swanson has had some good runs there and will be looking to capitalize on his experience and put the 17j to the front.

Swanson Gets New Crew Chief Starting in 2013

Jonathan Swanson recently announced the hire of a new crew chief.  John Cameron will be calling all the shots starting in 2013.  Below is some information about John.

My interest in racing started at the young age of 6 when I attended weekly races with my Father and Grandfather at New Egypt, the Grove, Bridgeport and about every racing facliity on the East Coast. As a young boy I immediately fell in love with racing. I took a different route at first. I started off by racing motocross from 1990 to 2002 when I retired due to injury. During this time I was also the head mechanic on Bobby Drayton’s Dirt Modified. In 2003 my true dream came when Fred Kennedy/Bill Turpin allowed me to work and travel with his Sprint Car team the 56. I got to work and learn with some very talented drivers, Trevor Lewis, Brooke Weibliey and Chris Coyle. We had 5 wins with Trevor Lewis, 2 at Bridgeport , 2 at Black Rock Speedway, 1 at Rolling Wheels and 1 win with Brooke at Bridgeport. Then Fred brought back the Yellow 89 which has deep family ties to my Grandftather, the car would be driven by Robbie Stillwaggon. During my stay with the 89 we had 2 victories, 1 at Delaware International Speedway and 1 at Williams Grove and several top 10 and top 5 finishes in points. I worked for the Stillwaggons from 2006 to 2012. Now in 2013 I have been brought on as Jonathan Swanson’s Crew Chief. This is another life long goal of mine. Hopefully my knowledge helps bring home a championship to John and his parents Susan and Howard who are by far the nicest people I have ever been around and should make for a fun 2013 season.

Also last but not least I am happily married to Amy, my wife of 5 years, and we have a 3 year old daughter Kylie. If it wasnt for my wife’s support and understanding on the ongoing commitment of racing, none of this wouldn’t be possible

Grandview marks the end to the 2012 URC season.

Jonathan Swanson raced this past weekend at the highbanks of the Grandview Speedway.  This would be the last race of the URC season for Swanson.  Swanson finished the race in the 15th position and was 14th in URC points when all was said and done.  From here Swanson will begin his tearing down of the sprinters, replacing parts, and freshening up his engines.

Look for exciting news over the off season concerning Jonathan Swanson and the 17j 360 Sprint Car.

Swanson takes the 17j on the Road for back to back weekends

Jonathan Swanson’s racing season is winding down.  The past two weekends Swanson put some miles on the truck and trailer.  Friday August 24th Swanson and co would invade the historic Williams Grove Speedway.  The Grove saw Swanson finish 14th in the nightly feature at the big half mile which was very good considering 14 cars went home and didn’t even make the feature event.  On Saturday August 25th Swanson would take the 17j to Port Royal Speedway.  This was URC’s only second visit there after a number of years away.  After a disappointing DNQ at Port Royal Swanson would head home to prep the car for Delaware on Sept 1st.  URC and Delaware have had a long lasting relationship usually consisting of multiple races per year at the First State Track.  Swanson was also happy to be racing at a place where he has had success in the past.  The night would come to an end on the first lap in the feature.  Swanson caught up in somebody else’s mess would actually get airborn and exit the racing facility coming off of turn 2.  Others involved were Randy West and JJ Grasso.  All drivers were ok.

After a couple of weeks of URC and Swanson will be back in action at the New Egypt Speedway which is basically in Swanson’s backyard.  Swanson is looking forward to racing the last two URC races closer to home with the URC finale taking place at Grandview Speedway during the 2nd weekend in October.

A Two Race Weekend for Swanson. Another Two Race Weekend Awaits

Jonathan Swanson competed at the Black Rock Speedway.  With NASCAR racing at nearby Watkins Glen Tony Stewart was in the house.  Swanson would qualify for the feature which was a race all in its self since this was a combined event with the NY 360 Sprint Car Tour.  Swanson would finish 23rd and head back to PA since the next day Selinsgrove was up for the URC Sprints.  At Selinsgrove it was a forgettable night with Jonathan failing to qualify for the nightly feature.

With a weekend off Swanson will be racing at Williams Grove Speedway.  Always a very quick track Swanson will be looking to put the 17j up front.  On Saturday night Swanson and URC will be off to Port Royal Speedway.  This is the second consective year that URC will visit the historic speedway after some time off.

Swanson finishes 22nd at Williams Grove Speedway. Lincoln Speedway rained out.

Jonathan Swanson went to one of the fastest Sprint Car tracks in the East on Friday night.  At an event where it’s a challange just to make the show, Swanson made the nights feature and finished 22nd position.  Swanson who has had a season plagued with bad luck and motor issues was just looking forward to getting back at the track last Friday night.  On Saturday night Lincoln Speedway cancelled due to weather.  This was the 3rd rain out for the season for the traveling series of URC.

This weekend Swanson and company will travel 5 hours north to Dundee NY.  Black Rock Speedway is a little 4/10 mile oval in the upstate NY region.  The small tacky track fits Swanson’s driving style perfectly.  Swanson who has raced at the 4/10 track on a few occasions is looking forward to the race on Friday night.  Look for the 17J to be up front at the tacky track this weekend.
